About GPPAC

The Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict (GPPAC) is a member-led global network of more than 300 civil society organisations in 104 countries, working to prevent violent conflict and sustain peace. Locally grounded and globally connected, GPPAC members are active before, during and after conflict. Embedded in their societies, they bring locally rooted knowledge, trusted relationships and a long-term presence that enable them to understand emerging conflict risks, connect actors across divides and strengthen the conditions for peace.

What distinguishes GPPAC is its network approach to conflict prevention. By connecting peacebuilders across countries and regions, GPPAC enables members to learn from one another, share early insights, build solidarity and act collectively in ways that individual organisations often cannot. The network also brings locally grounded perspectives into national, regional and global policy discussions, helping ensure that approaches to conflict prevention are shaped by the people and communities closest to the challenges.

Through this combination of local leadership and global connection, GPPAC works to strengthen prevention and safeguard the security of people, communities and societies.

Role and relationships

The GPPAC Foundation, based in The Hague and established under Dutch law, provides the legal basis for the GPPAC global network and hosts its Global Secretariat, which coordinates and supports the network’s work.

The International Steering Group, bringing together representatives from GPPAC’s regional networks and Working Groups, is the highest governing body of the GPPAC global network and sets its overall strategic direction. The Board of the GPPAC Foundation is the Foundation’s highest body and is responsible for its governance, oversight, legal compliance, and organisational sustainability. The Board is accountable to the ISG, while retaining ultimate legal decision-making authority under Dutch Foundation law.

Working closely with the Executive Director and the ISG, the Board members help ensure the Foundation supports GPPAC’s member-led network in line with its mission, values and commitment to locally led peacebuilding.

Responsibilities

  • Governance and oversight: Contribute to the Board’s oversight of organisational performance, risk management, annual plans and the implementation of GPPAC’s strategic direction.
  • Strategic guidance: Provide guidance to the Executive Director and monitor organisational progress against agreed strategic priorities and organisational frameworks.
  • Resource mobilisation and partnerships: Support GPPAC’s long-term financial sustainability by providing advice on resource mobilisation strategies and selectively leveraging professional networks to facilitate introductions to prospective funders and strategic partners.
  • Organisational integrity: Uphold GPPAC’s mission, values, Code of Conduct and integrity frameworks, and contribute to ensuring sound governance and compliance with the responsibilities of a Dutch foundation.
  • Network governance: Contribute to a constructive relationship between the Board, the International Steering Group and the wider GPPAC network, respecting GPPAC’s member-led governance model.
  • Board participation: Prepare for and participate actively in Board meetings and other relevant Board activities.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated commitment to the principles underpinning GPPAC’s work, including locally led peacebuilding, civil society leadership and conflict prevention.
  • Demonstrated experience in governance, senior leadership or strategic advisory roles, preferably within international civil society, philanthropy, international cooperation, networks or another mission-driven environment.
  • Experience in strategic partnership development, donor engagement and resource mobilisation, with established networks and the ability to open doors to potential funders and strategic partners.
  • Strong strategic judgement and the ability to provide independent oversight, constructive challenge and advice while respecting the distinction between Board governance and executive management.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and constructively in a diverse, international and consensus-based governance environment.
  • High standards of integrity, sound judgement, and the ability to identify, disclose and appropriately manage actual, potential or perceived conflicts of interest.
  • Knowledge of peacebuilding, conflict prevention, international cooperation or related policy fields would be an advantage.
  • Based in the Netherlands, with sufficient familiarity with the Dutch institutional environment to contribute effectively to the governance of a Dutch foundation.
  • Fluency in English is required; proficiency in Dutch is desirable.

GPPAC is committed to building an inclusive and representative Board that reflects the international and intergenerational character of our network. We welcome applications from candidates of diverse backgrounds, ages and perspectives. We particularly encourage applications from women and younger professionals, as we seek to strengthen gender and age balance across the Board.
