Consent is essential when sharing stories and experiences from the countries and communities where we work. It helps ensure that people feel heard, that their rights and agency are respected, and that organisations communicate responsibly.
At the same time, many organisations experience practical and ethical challenges in making consent truly meaningful:
- Is there enough space for people to say no – without consequences?
- How can we make consent processes more inclusive and accessible?
- Are our current ways of working too formal, burdensome or outdated?
- How do we address language, translation, and literacy barriers?
- How can we move beyond consent as a one-off administrative step and make it part of the storytelling process?
- And how can participatory storytelling help us shift the balance of power in how stories are created and shared?
From exchange to practical guidance
During this session, we will bring together experiences from across the Partos network and explore what good practice around consent and participatory storytelling could look like in practice.
We are pleased to welcome Emiel Mertens from the Expertise Centre for Humanitarian Communication and the University of Amsterdam, who has previously worked with the sector on the Guide on Inclusive Communication. Emiel will also share insights from his recent film project in Jamaica, which was developed through a participatory storytelling approach, with consent embedded throughout the process.
The session will be a safe, practical and collaborative space to share experiences, discuss challenges and work towards concrete handrails that organisations can use in their own practice.
