Dissatisfaction grows over erosion of development cooperation budget

In the coming years, the government wants to take 3.5 billion euros from the development cooperation and emergency aid budget to pay for the rising costs of asylum reception in the Netherlands. For 2023, this is already over 500 million euros. These measures are included in the Spring Memorandum that the Lower House will debate with Minister Kaag next Thursday. Partos, together with 80+ development organisations, is calling on the government and Lower House to reverse these measures as soon as possible. Today in the AD and Trouw a full-page ad with a powerful message.

06 June 2023

Well, it is in the national newspapers Trouw and AD this morning, but the headline is bogus. After all, it is not as if earthquake victims, or people without food due to prolonged drought, are rebelling in The Hague. Not even if our cabinet decides to cut up to 3.4 billion euros in the coming years on development, poverty alleviation and emergency aid.

Hence our call: let the development cooperation budget do what it is supposed to do: develop.

And ensure that people can work towards a hopeful future. Right where it is needed, in the most vulnerable countries. Invest in this. Development works. Giving up does not.
