Planning, Monitoring and Evaluating Impact

As an Impact Facilitator at Partos, Frédérique will help to bridge the gap between theory and practice. One way to do this is through Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation. What lays between a Theory of Change and practical outcomes? How to track and assess the results of interventions throughout the life of a specific programme? In other words: Frédérique will help facilitate, monitor and evaluate impact.

Making Choices

Although she describes herself as a late bloomer, listening to her story it becomes clear how Frédérique masters the law of attraction. “I have always known I wanted to be involved with civil society. I just hadn’t found out about all the different options yet,” she explains. Driven by the idea that she just had to do something, Frédérique decided to study Hospitality Management.

I have always known I wanted to be involved with civil society. I just hadn’t found out about all the different options yet.

Shaping the Journey

During her studies, Frédérique realised that this was not the path towards the meaningful work that she was actually looking for. She started to fill leisure time with volunteering, for instance working with children on several educational projects. Through an academic minor at an asylum centre and, later on, a project in South Africa, she continued broadening the horizon of possibilities and developing the knowledge and skills that she believed would bring her closer to a future in civil society work.

Creating Pathways

During an internship at UNICEF Netherlands, she started learning more about international affairs, peace and stability, and development cooperation. “That was the moment I began to understand and concretise the vast array of possibilities in the world of civil society. And that world fascinated me”, she says. So she decided to continue studying and finished a pre-masters in Geography, Planning and Environment (Radboud University), followed by a masters in Human Geography with a focus on Conflict, Territories and Identities (Radboud University).

That was the moment I began to understand and concretise the vast array of possibilities in the world of civil society. And that world fascinated me.

Intellectual Epiphany

“I remember those first lectures”, Frédérique smiles, “and how I thought I might not be able to do this”. The switch from Hospitality Management to an academic master’s degree meant building her own bridge between theory and practice. But soon, she found out that the path she had chosen brought her beyond previous horizons. “An intellectual epiphany. While fellow students complained about the workload, I was gormandising mountains of academic articles. And I loved it.”

Impactful Development Cooperation

Through her network, Frédérique meets Sara Kinsbergen (Radboud University) and becomes Research Intern Development Studies. After a research project with Young Africa, Frédérique confirms her interest in research for impactful development cooperation as a Junior Researcher Development Studies. Her research project focused on the role of unconscious mutual perceptions in development partnerships between private development initiatives and their Southern partner organisations.

Puzzles, Partos & People-led Development

At this point, it’s easy to see how Frédérique’s intrinsic motivation has led her to travel a journey towards the development cooperation sector. But there are still many options, so what were her reasons to join Partos? She explains her choice by referring to Partos’ multilayeredness and her love for research. “It’s the puzzle. I am looking forward to bringing together members and international partners to jointly learn about the different pieces and how they could fit together to create a better future for all.” Furthermore, she underlines her firm belief in people-led development and the importance of partnerships. “Our partners are our mirror. They are affected by policy and interventions, so we need to look at what they are reflecting.”

Bridging the Theory-Practice Gap

At Partos, we’re very happy to have Frédérique on board. We believe that the combination of topic-specific knowledge, practical experience and interest in research and innovation is exactly what we, our members and our sector need. To bridge the gap between theory and practice. To create impactful development cooperation. And to work towards a just, fair and sustainable world for everyone. Together.
