Food System Expert (Young Professionals are welcome to react as well)

In one of Cordaid’s greatest teams, we would like to be adding a Food System Expert.
Cordaid aims for climate-smart sustainable food systems with food security and nutrition for all and balanced economic, social and environmental outcomes. That sounds great, but we need to give it substance. Therefore, we are looking for an enthusiastic food system expert who supports this mission and ensures that knowledge, innovations and learnings are continuously gathered and embedded in the organisation, its programming and fundraising. The expert will be part of the Expertise, Innovation & Learning (EIL) unit at Cordaid’s Global office in The Hague.

What will you do?

Key duties and responsibilities:

  • Further develop and operationalise (organisationally and in projects and proposals) Cordaid’s food system strategy and lead on the agenda-setting within the organisation on this topic;
  • Lead in knowledge development and learning. Gather and translate developments and trends into information sheets, learning modules, or ensure they are embedded into programming and approaches. Gather data on best practices and share learnings. Co-Lead the internal Community of Experts related to sustainable livelihood (among others on food systems, inclusive finance, private sector development);
  • Build and maintain partnerships and networks (universities, compagnies, donors, etcetera) related to food systems, ensuring innovations, trends, knowledge and opportunities are gathered and shared;
  • Ensure constructive linkages are set-up / maintained with other relevant focus and cross-cutting areas of Cordaid (for example in the field of climate, digitalisation or private sector development);
  • Support business development, acquisition and proposal development processes. Build partnerships and alliances with relevant stakeholders and investigate potential (joint) funding opportunities. Act as technical expert in the proposal development phase or review the quality of proposals;
  • Provide technical assistance in projects implemented by the global office or one of our regional or country offices. The aim is to be around 40% billable in donor-funded projects;
  • Support the collection and analysis of strategic results on food systems, and define means of verification.


Who are you?

Cordaid is looking for an enthusiastic expert with a significant track record in a technical and advisory role in the field of food systems, or a young professional whom has the ambition to grow into an expert position at an international NGO.

  • You have a Masters in agroecology, international or rural development studies, development economics or related study and preferably 5 years relevant working knowledge in the field of food security and food systems;
  • You have significant knowledge of (climate resilient/smart) sustainable food systems and strategies, food- and nutrition security, food and agri-market systems and value-chains;
  • You have knowledge of the food sector and actors and socio-economic developments, both globally and in the countries Cordaid works in;
  • You have experience in strategy, policy, programme and project development.
  • You are able to deliver technical assistance in projects/programmes.
  • You are able to analyse / review programmes, projects, strategies and approaches and formulate/provide constructive advice on improvements, learnings, results.
  • You are able to generate and share knowledge and lessons learned at a local and international level.
  • You have strong facilitation, training and writing skills.
  • You have experience in business development, fundraising and acquisition trajectories.
  • You are representative, have strong social and communication skills, and you are able to acquire and foster partnerships.
  • You are flexible and able to deal with multiple complex assignments.
  • You have advanced English and French language skills. Dutch is an added value.
  • You are willingness and able to travel frequently and at short notice to fragile countries and settings.
