In the Netherlands, Indonesia and around the world, our 130 passionate professionals improve the sexual and reproductive health and rights of young people.    

Rutgers combines work on the ground with research, advocacy and promoting public support. Our focus is on sexuality education and information, access to contraception and safe abortion and the prevention of sexual and gender-based violence.  

 

The International department is recruiting a:

Senior Advocacy Officer Safe Abortion 

(20-24 hours per week, vacancy number 2023-X) 

In this role you will work on the new phase of our programme She Makes Her Safe Choice. The focus of this programme is the reduction of unsafe abortions in 4 countries in Francophone West Africa. The programme aims at an impact beyond West Africa and therefore also includes work at the international level. Your work will focus on this international level. You will also contribute to one or more other programmes, conducting similar activities with a broader focus on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR).  

 

What you will be doing 

You will act as a resource person on safe abortion. This includes the following: 

  • You develop advocacy and public support strategies and interventions.
  • You act as an expert on advocacy and related strategies, such as public support, in relation to safe abortion at international level.
  • You develop tools and materials, for advocacy, public support, technical advice and communication purposes.
  • You conduct advocacy and public support interventions, including participation in relevant networks.
  • You conduct and facilitate mutual capacity strengthening and learning activities around safe abortion.
  • You represent the programme and Rutgers in relevant internal and external meetings and networks.
  • You build and maintain a network with colleagues and peers.
  • You contribute to communication campaigns and actions. 

You will work in close collaboration with partners and other relevant stakeholders. You will be part of one of our international programme teams. You will report to Paula Dijk, the Programme Manager of She Makes Her Safe Choice. 

 

What we are looking for 

Our ideal candidate is a strategic, analytical and creative team player. We are looking for candidates who can get things done pleasantly and convincingly through their excellent communication and diplomacy skills. A good sense of humor is an asset. You are a team player and networker, respectful to (cultural) differences and can navigate different values, backgrounds, genders and religions. 

You have an interest and passion in the field of safe abortion as well as Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights, and meet the following criteria: 

  • You have a degree in Social Sciences or similar, or professional experience relevant for the position that proves you are at a similar level;
  • You have at least five years relevant experience in an international setting, preferably in countries in Africa or Asia, working on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, in particular on access to safe abortion
  • You have proven to be successful in developing advocacy strategies, interventions and campaigns.
  • You have experience in facilitating mutual learning and capacity strengthening activities, such as workshops or coaching (online, face-to-face and hybrid); 
  • You have an interest in external communication;
  • You have professional working proficiency in English. Working proficiency in French is preferred.
  • You are willing and able to travel abroad for work a couple times per year.

 

What we offer 

You will work in an exciting and challenging international environment, with highly motivated and passionate colleagues. Depending on knowledge and experience, the maximum salary for a 36-hour working week for this position is minimum €4.108 and maximum € 5.335 gross per month (FWG scale 60; salaries per 1 January 2024). In addition to the primary employment conditions, Rutgers also offers a competitive package of secondary employment conditions, including a 8,33% end-of-year allowance. The collective labor agreement cao ggz applies.  

Our office is located in Utrecht, the Netherlands, but you will be working with colleagues all over the world. Most colleagues work from home for a significant part of the week.  We strongly prefer a candidate based in The Netherlands, but working from a country close to The Netherlands could be an option.
