Let’s celebrate the 2025 International Day of Persons with Disabilities!
The Hague, Wednesday December 3rd, 2025
The We are Able! partners ZOA, African Disability Forum, SeeYou Foundation, The Leprosy Mission Netherlands (Leprazending), VNG International and The Hague Academy for Local Governance, in cooperation with the Dutch Coalition for Disability and Development (DCDD) are proud to invite you to The Hague, on Wednesday, 3 December 2025.
We invite you to join us in celebration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) and mark the outcomes, lessons learned, and recommendations from the 2021-2025 We Are Able! programme. We will highlight how inclusive food security has been promoted in Burundi, DR Congo, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Sudan and Uganda. This has been done through community outreach and empowerment, via strengthening of Organisations of People with Disabilities and CSOs and through policy engagement of local and national governments.
In the context of climate change, conflict, and inequality, food insecurity affects everyone, but not all equally. Persons with disabilities often face barriers to access, participation, and decision-making. This event showcases how We are Able! has reduced barriers, built capacities, raised awareness and influenced policy formulation and implementation, ensuring food security for all.
What to expect?
The event will discuss the following issues and proposals:
- How can food security policies and systems become more inclusive?
- What roles do several actors and stakeholders play in achieving inclusive food security?
- What other lessons can be shared from five years of WaA! programme implementation?
The programme is hosted by Kiza Magendane, publicist and political scientist, who will moderate a panel discussion with Esther Kyozira (Director NUDIPU), Edwin Visser (Director ZOA), and Sophia Mohammed (Country Director at Light for the world South Sudan) with one additional panellist to be confirmed. Moreover, Iyute Deborah Oyuu, a Leiden University researcher and Gender and Disability Specialist and Human Rights Advocate from Uganda will deliver a keynote address. Finally, we will present a research report by the DCDD Network to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the state of disability inclusion in Dutch development cooperation.
