Stories that Stir: film screening & discussion uncovering IUU Fishing

Join this thought-provoking session featuring two short films exploring the urgent issue of Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing. These films take different approaches to storytelling, and we’ll explore together how these choices shape our understanding, empathy, and action.

  • Date and time 23 September 2025, 15:00 - 17:00 CET
  • Where The Hague Humanity Hub, Den Haag
  • For whom Everyone who is interested in different approaches to storytelling

In this session, our guest speaker Floriana Timmer, a bachelor student at Hogeschool van Hall Larenstein, will focus on the impact of storytelling on people, especially with film. How can film inspire us to take action, what works well, and what doesn’t?

She will show us two pieces of film, one of which is a shortened version of a documentary: Before You Eat (20 minutes). This was made by SBMI (the Indonesian migrant workers’ union) and supported by Greenpeace. It is about IUU fishing and modern slavery associated with it. On the same subject, she will also show a shortened version of a film, Buoyancy (25 minutes), which is inspired by true stories.
