Working session: the vision for the future of development cooperation

Over the past two months, we have gathered input within the Partos network in preparation for a vision for the future of development cooperation — as part of our consultation process for the AIV Advisory Council. It is now time to build on these joint recommendations and take a further step forward through innovation.

The world is in a state of transition: geopolitical power shifts, climate change, shifting global dynamics. This calls for more than just fine-tuning existing policies. In this session, we will attempt to break free from existing frameworks — from the current donor-recipient relationship, from conventional funding models, and perhaps even from the concept of ‘development cooperation’ as we know it today.

In this session, in collaboration with the Dutch Research Institute for Transitions (DRIFT), we will work together to answer the question: what will equitable, global cooperation look like in fifteen years’ time, and what does that mean for our role within it?

This requires something different from all of us compared to the previous round: not only responding from our own position, thematic focus and practice, but also allowing ourselves to be challenged to question that very practice. It is precisely the kind of discomfort needed to truly look ahead.

We are inviting a diverse cross-section of the network to attend, alongside partners from the Global Majority and people accustomed to thinking in terms of systems and transitions. Through an interactive workshop — featuring both breakout sessions and plenary sessions — we will work towards concrete recommendations and a vision for the sector’s future that looks beyond the issues of the day.

We are absolutely delighted with the energy and commitment the network has shown so far. Now is the time to take it up a notch.
